About the Tour

Day 1: Cusco – Ollantaytambo – Hydroelectric – Aguas Calientes .

The first day of the Machu Picchu bus tour begins with pickup between 7:00 and 7:30 am from Cusco for a 6.5-hour trip. During the trip, you’ll make two stops to reach Hidroeléctrica. First, you’ll make a 10- to 15-minute stop at Ollantaytambo, where you can purchase water and/or snacks. Then, you’ll ascend to the Málaga Pass, where you’ll admire the beautiful landscape of the high Andes with snow-capped peaks. Then, you’ll descend through the high jungle, passing through towns like Santa María until you reach Santa Teresa. There, you’ll make your second stop (40 minutes), where you’ll have time for lunch. Afterward, you’ll continue to Hidroeléctrica, where you’ll begin a two-and-a-half-hour hike (mostly flat) to reach Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu’s town). From the hydroelectric plant, you can also take a train (25 minutes) if you don’t want to walk, but this costs an extra US$35 (95% of people walk). Upon arriving in Aguas Calientes and settling into your accommodation, you’ll have a little free time to rest or visit the hot springs (admission fee S/15). Afterward, we’ll have dinner, where you’ll be given all the instructions for the following day (overnight).
